Chiropractic's Health Newsletter.
In this months newsletter:
What are you drinking?
As
summer is in full swing Americans will be looking to cold beverages to
quench their thirst and battle the heat. According to a new study
that looked at consumer beverage purchases the drink of choice will be
cola. The study found that the average American will drink close
to 45 gallons of cola this year.
Our bodies are more
than 90% water and require adequete amounts to function properly.
Cola is a horrible choice for hydration and health wise. Colas
contain more sugar than you would believe and provide no nutrients or
hydration for the body.
Such high levels of pop consumption do cause health problems. Here’s
what the IJCP says: “Sugar-sweetened soft drinks have been shown to
cause obesity, type 2 diabetes, dental decay, and metabolic syndrome.
They appear also to increase the risk for osteoporosis, gout,
gastroesophageal reflux disease, hypovitaminosis C, albuminuria. and
chronic kidney disease.”
And
before you try to sell us on the benefits of diet cola's you should
know that a new study found that diet colas caused weight gain in
excess of their regular counterparts. A study presented at a American
Diabetes Association meeting this week shows that drinking diet soda is
associated with a wider waist in humans. And a second study shows that
aspartame -- an artificial sweetener in diet soda -- actually raises
blood sugar in mice prone to diabetes.
So, when
you want to quench your thirst this summer reach for a glass of water.
Your body needs it and choosing water will help you avoid adding
unnecessary chemicals and sugar to your body.
Have you been a disease hoarder?

If you've ever tuned into the A&E television program Hoarders,
it doesn't take a genius to quickly realize it's going to take more
than a bottle of Windex to clean up all the garbage, moldy food and
rotting animal poop that's been accumulating in those houses for years
and years and years...
But some people
accumulate health problems the same way, and unrealistically believe it
will take just a visit or two at the Chiropractor's to fix all their
issues. From years of neglect, bad advise and denial, their chronic
illnesses pile up until they can no longer recognize the healthy state
their body used to be in. By the time they decide to see a
Chiropractor, they've got a real 'dis-ease hoarding' problem and
unfortunately one adjustment isn't enough to clean up the squalor.
The goal of Chiropractic
isn't to temporarily sweep your symptoms under a rug to make things
look good on the surface, but to actually roll our sleeves up and get
rid of the underlying clutter once and for all. Sure it might take a
little more time and a bit more elbow grease to transform your health
our natural way, but in the end your human house will be clean, pristine
and habitable again. This
is why we emphasize the importance of following through with our care
recommendations. Based on the many patients and years of
experience we have we know what works best to not only get you out of
pain but to correct the underlying problem. If you have questions
about the course of care we have recommended or why we have recommended
it please ask.
Baby Steps.

If you have a goal you want to reach the easiest way to get there
is with baby steps. When we recommend or are ask about diets or
what patients can to to lose weight or be healthier we always start
with easy things. With anything if you make it too hard or
unsustainable you will get discouraged and quit.
If
you don't currently exercise there are a million baby steps to get
started. Park your car in the far end of the parking lot for
extra walking. take the stairs instead of the elevator. Get
up and walk to your coworkers area instead of beeping them on the
phone. You could begin a walking program or a run/walk program if
you wanted to become a runner. Get a partner to join you because
it makes you accountable for getting your workout done and will make it
more enjoyable. Whatever you choose, just get active. Last months
newsletter discussed how sitting is killing us.
If your
looking to lose weight or eat better there are baby steps here too.
Don't throw out all the foods you currently love and eat nothing
but salads. You will hate it and not stick with it returning to
unhealthy habits and feeling that dieting does not work. Instead
begin by making healthier choices. Perhaps choose the chicken
nuggets instead of the fried chicken sandwich. You will reduce
your fat and calories just by not having the bun and cheese on the
sandwich. The next step may be to get the grilled chicken
sandwich instead of the fried one or a wrap instead of a bun. You
could have your regular meal but drink water instead of cola. If
you have a donut for breakfast balance it by having some brocolli at
supper. Slowly you will continue to add good and positive choices
into your food choices while eliminating the bad ones.
Ultimately the healthiest eating plan is one similar to our paleo
ancestors. If you would like to see what that is like please
check out this link.
It's a big step to follow a paleo style eating plan so don't let
it intimidate you, take baby steps and always strive to make better
choices.
With any goals you will slip up. Don't beat
yourself up and feel that you can't do it. That will do no one,
including yourself, any good. Tomorrow is another day and you can
get back on track at any time.
